How Australia Dealt With Covid

Anne Chellingworth talks about life & COVID in Australia. Anne's Bio: I was born in Chester, England but have been fortunate to live my life in primarily 3 countries. My formative years were in New Plymouth, New Zealand. At aged 19 I travelled to England, working there for several years until emigrating to Canada in 1970. The first 10 years were spent in Montreal, Canada. In my last 5 years there, I worked with Harold Greenberg in Astral Film Productions. My role was Assistant to Harold and Public Relations Co-ordinator. During my time with Astral they produced such movies as “Porky’s”; “City on Fire and “A Man called Intrepid” a TV mini-series starring David Niven & Michael York. I assisted Harold each year organising parties for the Montreal World Film Festival and the Toronto Internal Film Festival and prepared information packs for Investors. I also had the opportunity to visit several film sets both in Montreal ‘City on Fire” where I met Henry Fonda and Shelley Winters and Mobile, Alabama where we were filming “Death Ship” starring Richard Crenna and George Kennedy. I left Montreal and Astral after the birth of my daughter when we moved to Toronto and then later after the birth of my son, we moved to Ottawa. In 1988 we relocated to Wellington, New Zealand. In 1999 I took a role in the Financial Services industry. Initially on a project differentiating service for Financial Advisers and then as an Executive Assistant. After my divorce in 2002 I moved to Brisbane, Australia. I stayed in the Financial Services industry and moved into an Event organiser role with a large Insurance Company. My daughter who represented NZ in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne now lives with her husband and 2 children in Melbourne, Australia. My son returned to Toronto Canada in 2012, where he still resides and works in the film industry as an Editor. |

Tridel’s BOLT Program

Raly Chakarova of Tridel talks about their BOLT Program which recruits youth for careers in construction in priority GTA neighbourhoods. Raly is the Executive Director of the BOLT Charitable Foundation. BOLT was started by Tridel with a mandate to assist under-resourced youth connect to careers in construction through raising awareness, career exploration, and financial support for skilled training and post-secondary education. Prior to this role, Raly was the Director of Policy at the Toronto Region Board of Trade, leading its work on talent and trade. One of the policy reports she authored at the Board was the high profiled “Help Wanted: Modernizing Employment and Skills Training Services in Ontario" [PDF] that looked at improving workforce development practices in the province. A big reason for joining the BOLT Foundation was to put the principles of that report into practice. As a former senior advisor to provincial cabinet ministers, including Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development and Growth, Raly has an in-depth and practical understanding of government policy. Raly is a Board Member of ACCES Employment, a member of RESCON's Anti-Racism Roundtable, and member of the Women in Construction Committee at George Brown College. She holds a Master of Public Administration from Queen’s University and a Specialist in International Development and Political Science from University of Toronto. |

Incoming President’s Address

Next year's TERC President Shaheynoor Talukder lays out her plans for the 2021-2022 year. Shaheynoor was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where she completed her B.A. in Biology and minor in Cross Cultural Studies. She moved to Toronto to complete her M.Sc. in molecular genetics at the University of Toronto, where she also worked for two years as a Research Associate. She obtained her law degree at the University of Ottawa. Since becoming a lawyer in 2013, Shaheynoor has been practicing estate and business law in Toronto. She is also the Vice-Chair of the adjudicative Toronto Local Appeal Body tribunal. Shaheynoor is an animal lover and proud mommy of two cats. Her other passions include playing video games, reading science fiction and fantasy novels, hiking, watching animation and action movies in theaters, and eating out (when that was possible). She is actively involved in her community and a member of different community organizations. |

Jim Parker has been pastor of Bethany Baptist Church in East York since 1996. Jim is also an active member of the Pape Village BIA, and is Founder and Chairperson of East York Strategy -- a collaborative effort to reduce crime and create good in our neighbourhood through providing positive activities with positive people for the youth in our community. Jim has also coordinated Bethany's Food Bank since 2013, including serving three times as many clients each week during Covid. Jim lives in East York with his wife and three daughters, and enjoys cheering on the Jays and taking rides on his jetski. He will talk about the experiences serving food bank clients during Covid, as well as trying to positively engage the youth in our community through these challenging times. We will also hear from a couple of people who have been directly impacted for good by our Rotary Club’s support of their food bank. |

Toronto East Rotary Club member Amanda Maragos will give her Classification Talk. Amanda is the Director of Client Services & Volunteer Programs for Philip Aziz Centre for Hospice Care & Emily's House Children's Hospice in downtown Toronto. She is an experienced professional specializing in Hospice Palliative Care client/patient programming and supports, in addition to Volunteer Management (particularly in both the healthcare and social services sectors) for almost 15 years. Equipped with program development & communication skills and leadership abilities she currently manages and develops programming that supports clients (adults and children) in both a community-based hospice and a 10-bed residential paediatric hospice (that also employs a volunteer team of over 350 people). She also provides volunteer and staff education and consultation for various Toronto not-for-profit organizations; providing insight and best practices for programs that often support vulnerable people. She is also a volunteer herself - contributing her time to serve her community as a board director, client support volunteer and standards advisor for 3 separate organizations. Advocacy for volunteerism and inclusive healthcare for all is a practice that is close to Amanda's heart and one of her passions! She loves to see compassion and connectivity lead to acts of kindness and personal growth for all stakeholders. She loves comic books, sci-fi culture, art, music, tai chi, and food! Especially food. |

Nadine Sookermany is the Executive Director of Fife House, the largest supportive housing provider to people living with HIV/AIDS in the country. She comes to this work as an educator, community activist and advocate. Nadine is the former Executive Director of Women’s Health Clinic, a community health center that delivers quality patient-centered care through a feminist lens in Winnipeg, Canada. She brings decades of senior leadership experience in the non-profit sector to her work in the area of community and social services, health, equity and accessibility. She holds a Women’s Studies and Political Science degree from the University of Manitoba, along with the completion of graduate courses at the University of Toronto, Ontario Institute of Studies in Education (OISE). Nadine also held the position of professor with the Assaulted Women’s and Children’s Counsellor/Advocate and Social Service Worker programs at George Brown College in Toronto for over 12 years. She is incredibly passionate about community- based health and harm reduction, and this passion has guided her work as a community leader, human resources practitioner and social justice advocate for over 25 years. |

The Role of Ravines in Flood Protection, Wildlife, Challenges and How Toronto Field Naturalists Help

Bio: Ellen Schwartzel is President of the Toronto Field Naturalists. Ellen's career in environmental policy included 23 years with the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, and she was Ontario's Deputy Environmental Commissioner from 2014 until retiring in 2018. Ellen received her BSc and MSc in Botany at the University of Toronto.
Ellen Schwartzel, the president of the Toronto Field Naturalists, will introduce Toronto’s ravine landscapes - nature at our doorsteps. Her talk features ravine wildlife, the role of ravines in flood protection, and how these lands have changed over thousands of years. She will also sketch out the 21st century challenges facing the ravines and their biodiversity, and the ways Toronto Field Naturalists are lending a hand. Photos and art by TFN members bring the ravines to life in a Zoom format. The presentation is about 30 minutes, followed by Q’s and A’s.
About the Organization: Toronto Field Naturalists connects people with nature in the Toronto area. We help people understand, enjoy, and protect Toronto’s green spaces and the species that inhabit them. We have been offering guided walks, lectures, stewardship and citizen science initiatives since 1923. We also own and manage several nature reserves. |

In addition to leading the organization, Leora facilitates seminars and workshops for educators on teaching practice and pedagogy, promotes Facing History’s work with outside organizations and donors, and oversees the development of classroom curricula, including Stolen Lives: The Indigenous Peoples of Canada and the Indian Residential Schools. She currently resides and works in Toronto, on the traditional homeland of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Haudenosaunee (Ongehonwe) Confederacy, and the Wendat Nation. |

Mark Farrant is the CEO, Founder of The Canadian Juries Commission. Mark believes that "Jury duty is the cornerstone of our justice system, and the right to be tried by a jury of one’s peers is core to Canadian democracy. Yet jury duty has been neglected and unsupported for decades, and has not kept pace with the modern world. The concerns for jury duty existed long before the pandemic, and have been compounded by COVID-19. As courts begin to reopen across Canada there will be a critical need to impanel juries, but Canadians' focus will be squarely on job security, seeking employment, and retooling the economy - and not jury duty. Jury duty must be included in Canada's post-pandemic recovery." |

Psilocybin Therapy

Holly Bennett is the Communications Director at TheraPsil. TheraPsil is a non-profit patient advocacy organization working to legalize psilocybin therapy for Canadians in medical need. Holly has over 8 years of experience in the Canadian cannabis industry including marketing, communications, and patient education, which has prepared her to successfully educate stakeholders about the merits and limitations of psilocybin therapy for therapeutic purposes while advocating for compassionate access. Holly holds a special interest in bioethics and drug policy and is passionate about mental health, harm reduction, and compassionate patient care. In her current role with TheraPsil, she is dedicated to helping change public perception and policy regarding psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy. |

National Wildlife Centre: Wildlife, People, and Nature – a One Health Approach

Dr. Sherri Cox has been working with wildlife for more than 20 years. She is a wildlife veterinarian and the medical director of the National Wildlife Centre Canada, where she regularly provides diagnosis, treatment, and surgical intervention for thousands of sick and injured wildlife across the country. Sherri also teaches chemical immobilization to the provincial governmental authorities and teaches courses in wildlife rehabilitation at the University of Guelph. As a board-certified specialist (ABVP, Avian), she and her medical team provide medical oversight for wildlife patients at four wildlife rehabilitation centres in Canada. Sherri holds a PhD from the University of Guelph where her research is focused on lead toxicosis in free-ranging trumpeter swans in Ontario, Canada. Her talk will focus on information about the National Wildlife Centre and their exciting project to build a wildlife hospital and education centre in the GTA. |

Vision Loss, Rehabilitation & Covid

Sue Marsh-Woods is the Regional Manager for Vision Loss Rehab Ontario (formerly part of the CNIB) in Toronto. She began her career with CNIB in 1985 as an Orientation & Mobility Specialist working in an Intensive Rehabilitation Program empowering those with vision loss to be confident and independent travelers. During these early years, Sue learned a great deal about the importance of collaboration and ensuring those she was supporting were empowered to achieve their goals of independence. Sue moved on to do Intake and counseling in 1989 where she was responsible for assessing and supporting those experiencing vision loss to access rehab services. Over the years Sue has received several awards including the CNIB’s Employee of the Year Award in 2014, the United Way’s Bhayana Family Award in 2010 for Creativity and Innovation, and the Foundation Fighting Blindness Leadership Award to name a few. Sue is both passionate and committed to ensuring that the services provided by Vision Loss Rehab Canada are of the highest quality and support a client-centered approach. |

After completing my DBT therapy, I then went on to finishing my first college diploma & have returned to further my education.
