Jul. 16, 2020 12:30 p.m.
Facing History and Ourselves’ mission is to use lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate. Founded in 1976 in Massachusetts, Facing History began providing professional development to Canadian teachers in 1981. In 2008, their Toronto-based office became a Canadian registered charity and began operating as a separate partner entity to the U.S.-based organization. Today, Facing History has a network of more than 10,000 teachers across Canada. Leora is the Director of the Canadian Facing History and Ourselves program. Facing History is an educational not-for-profit organization whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and anti-semitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. Leora works with public and Catholic school boards across Ontario as well as Jewish day schools in the GTA. Leora oversees and facilitates professional development for educators here in Canada on teaching practice and pedagogy. She has written study guides to accompany films, most recently for a documentary on the life of Hannah Senesh. Todd has worked in the non-profit sector for close to 25 years, with short stints in social marketing, and at senior levels of the Federal Government, and brief detours as a line cook and DJ. While he worked as an advocate in various sectors including HIV/AIDS, anti-poverty and youth homelessness, it was as the Executive Director of the White Ribbon Campaign he found his stride. Working on the world's largest effort of men and boys to end gender-based violence, Todd became a global expert in men, masculinity, gender equality and violence prevention and his work took him to over 40 countries around the world, advising with the United Nations, governments, NGOs and communities. In 2019 he joined Movember as the Canada Country Director, bringing his work with men and masculinity full circle to the cause of men's health. Todd was born and raised in Toronto, where he still lives with wife, two kids, and dog Pepper, who loves his Grandpa Brian who gives him too many treats. |
