Helping Teachers & Students Stand Up To Hate
Jul. 16, 2020 12:30 p.m.
Facing History and Ourselves’ mission is to use lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate. Founded in 1976 in Massachusetts, Facing History began providing professional development to Canadian teachers in 1981. In 2008, their Toronto-based office became a Canadian registered charity and began operating as a separate partner entity to the U.S.-based organization. Today, Facing History has a network of more than 10,000 teachers across Canada. Leora is the Director of the Canadian Facing History and Ourselves program. Facing History is an educational not-for-profit organization whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and anti-semitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. Leora works with public and Catholic school boards across Ontario as well as Jewish day schools in the GTA. Leora oversees and facilitates professional development for educators here in Canada on teaching practice and pedagogy. She has written study guides to accompany films, most recently for a documentary on the life of Hannah Senesh. Leora has one son who is a recent school graduate and another son in Grade 3 at Paul Penna DJDS. |
