Toronto East Rotary Club Community Service Scholarship

Purpose:

To encourage and support post-secondary education among young adults who are involved in community service activities.

Criteria:

1)   Open to graduating students who attend a secondary school in the Toronto East Rotary Club area and who have been accepted to attend an accredited post secondary institution or program, which includes Apprenticeship Training, College or University programs, including registered private career colleges.  Applications will be accepted from those who are still in the post-secondary application stages, but the award will not be given until acceptance is finalized.

2)   Though successful graduation, post-secondary acceptance and a positive reference are required to receive the award, this is not primarily an academic award. Foremost, a successful applicant must have a strong record of community service in each of the past 3 years.  A list of the community service activities involvement will be required.

3)   Three (3) references are required – one from each of a teacher or work supervisor, a supervisor for community service involvement, and a general character reference.

4)   Interviews will be conducted as part of the selection procedure.

5)  A 500 word essay will be also required on one of the following two topics:

a)   Describe the most rewarding experience you have had while performing your community service hours. In what ways was it rewarding for you personally? In what ways do you feel it was rewarding for the people for whom you were performing that service?

b)  If you could form a community service group to address a need that you think is not presently being met sufficiently, what would it be? Why do feel that is a need to be addressed? What makes you believe it is not be addressed sufficiently at this time? What specifically would you attempt to do or do differently to address that need?
